A Brief History of The Old Studebaker Factory Building #84
The origin of the Studebaker Corporation reaches back to 1852 when the Studebaker brothers started their first business, a blacksmith shop, in the heart of South Bend, Indiana. This small, family-run business evolved into the Studebaker Corporation, and production of Studebaker automobiles began in 1900. The Studebaker Corporation
ceased production in 1963, marking the end of an era and closing its doors forever.
Most of the Studebaker facilities throughout the midwest were destroyed over the years, but the Studebaker Factory Building #84 is one of the last former production facilities still in existence today. In fact, Building #84 has been preserved and refurbished, and is now home to the South Bend Warehousing and Distribution Corporation, M. and S. Management Company, Inc., and the Ivy Tower Corporation. The Studebaker Factory Building #84 is located in the commercial district in downtown South Bend, and is situated across from the Coveleski Stadium and the South Bend Silver Hawks.
